Hmm .. 2012 already! I didn’t do too much blogging last year. Even fruityoaty has quite a bit of posts already! LOL!
Maybe I should change this site again .. maybe.
But first thing first .. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2012!

I thought I’d post the above two images here after I read Craft & Vision FREE eBook titled Craft & Vision: 11 Ways to Improve Your Photography. The very first chapter is on how to “make your images more dynamic”, one of them is by using long shutter speed and/or zooming. It is a very nice book (the title speaks for itself ) with tips from several professional photographers.

Another chapter in that free eBook talks about “the power of the print”, and this week, Craft & Vision released a more in-depth eBook about the subject: Making the Print: Printing Techniques for the Digital Photographer. This one is not free though. It’s USD$5, but until January 21st, 2012 (11:59PM PST), you can get it for USD$4 when you use the code PRINT4. And if you want to get 5 or more eBooks, you can use the code PRINT20 to get 20% off.

It covers pretty much everything from buying a printer to colour management to printing on canvas.
Hmm .. I should maybe find my old photos for (or do) the other 10 tips from the free eBook and blog about them .. that should give me 10 more posts!!!
The 1st post this year is on 11.11.11 … how interesting (no, I did not plan that). Hope this is not the only 1 post in 2011. LOL!
Apparently it’s very rare that the lunar eclipse coincides with the winter solstice. The last time was in 1638. The next time will be in 2094.
Winter solstice will be in the afternoon. And the day will get longer after that. Yay!
The lunar eclipse will be in the morning. 2:40AM!!! Uhm …
I want to see it .. just like the one in 2008 (another post here) .. but I can see the moon now, which means at 2:40am tomorrow, it’ll be behind some tall buildings. Which means if I want to see it, I have to go out in the cold. Hmmm…
I think I’ll see it in my dreams this time …
Update (Dec. 21st): there are some nice pictures on flickr.
So according to the news .. the Northern Lights may be visible from here. Exciting!!
But with all the light pollution that we have, what’s the chance of seeing one?
I took this picture in 2005, when we were in Yosemite Park. It was a very quick decision to take the picture because we were leaving to go to another spot in the park. I took it just because it looked interesting .. didn’t think too much about the light, positioning, etc. LOL!
When I look at the picture now, I can see the inside of the van, wordings on the window on the other side of the van, and a reflection of a stop sign.

I’ve never thought of the picture again until today .. when I read Chasing Reflections, the latest addition to Craft & Vision eBook library.
Actually, I seldom take “reflection” photos unless it involves water … sad, I know. LOL. After reading the eBook, I thought to myself that I could use some of the pointers in there and have more fun with reflections (not just water reflection ). So .. all I have to do now is .. make time to actually go out and take pictures…
Anyway, here’s a brief overview from the publisher on the “Chasing Reflections” eBook:
Chasing Reflections is the third in the series The Print & The Process. Eli Reinholdtsen is a creative photographer who, through her unique and skillful approach to reflections, captures moments and juxtapositions that are truly an art form at its finest. Reinholdtsen digs deep and shares tangible ways to scout, setup, and shoot complex and magical photographs that push the envelope of visual poetry. Her playful descriptions aren’t shy of digging deep into the techniques required to capture movement, timing, and contrast.
Chasing Reflections is an inspiring collection of 37 photographs that stand on their own a pieces of pure art (The Print) followed by a discussion of the creation of those visual moments (The Process).
The eBook costs US$5, or US$4 if you use promo code REFLECT4. Interested in getting more eBooks? Use promo code REFLECT20 to get 20% off when you buy 5 or more eBooks. Both codes expires this Sunday, August 1, 2010 @ 11:59PM PST.

Kenya. I’ve never been to Kenya (and maybe never .. although I shouldn’t say “never” ).
Safari. I’ve never been on a real Safari. The only ones I’ve been were “Taman Ria Safari” in Indonesia and “African Lion Safari” in Hamilton, Ontario .. so, not exactly “real”. LOL.
Real wildlife animals (not in zoos) that I’ve seen are limited to squirrels, chipmunks, a little fox, snakes, bugs and a few deers:

So, when David duChemin released his new eBook on his Safari in Kenya (titled “Safari, A Monograph”), I got to see his pictures (oops, photographs) & his thoughts when he was there. For US$5, he took me on a Safari with him (US$4 if you use the promo code SAFARI4, valid until July 11, 2010 11:59PM PST).
He also has an eBook on his Venice trip. I’ve never been there either .. hmm.
Feel free to go over to his website and check out his other eBooks. He has another promo code SAFARI20 to get 20% off if you buy 5 or more eBooks (valid until July 11, 2010 11:59PM PST).
Here’s their quick overview of the eBook:
SAFARI, A Monograph is the second in the series The Print & The Process. David duChemin unpacks the images from a 10-day safari in Kenya, first letting the images speak for themselves then diving deep into the process behind the photographs. This eBook offers an honest discussion about the issues connected to the creation of duChemin’s SAFARI monograph, including the gear used, the techniques employed, and the lessons learned. It’s a 62-page PDF eBook that will provide you with inspiration amidst the details of the Why and the How. This is not so much about how to photograph your first safari, though you’ll learn that too; it’s a look at the lessons learned, and re-learned, by a photographer who is now 25 years into his craft. Also included are the Adobe Lightroom settings used for Serengeti Chocolate, the duo-tone look in which much of his SAFARI monograph has been styled, and a downloadable Lightroom Preset.

I just realized that I didn’t have any post about the Rogers Chinese Lantern Festival in 2008. I posted the pictures on flickr, but not here. Why was that? Hmmmmm..
It was the third one and also the last one that we had here in Toronto. They didn’t have it in 2009, and it turned out that it apparently had been cancelled indefinitely. Sad. I was hoping they would have it this year, until I googled about it. So, just to make myself feel better, I thought I post some pictures from 2008.
It was an interesting mix of objects in 2008, we had buildings from around the world and all sorts of animals (the pandas were back! ). You can see them on my flickr set, but here are some of them:
An Owl in the Enchanted Forest
 The Dolphin Parade
 World of Dinosaurs
 Tower of Pisa
 Statue of Liberty
Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood
 Porcelain Pagoda
Click here to see the 2007 list and here for the 2007 flickr set.
And the 2006 posts (not on flickr): Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 | Day 7 | Day 8 | Day 9 | Day 10 | Day 11 | Day 12 | Day 13 | Day 14 | Extra Day
In the past few months, I’ve been following David duChemin’s blog … check out his blog on “Suck-Mode” or “Confessions of a So-Called PRO“. I feel better.
Scoot over to his blog to see more of his posts. Or if you want to download some of the posts to read offline, he has an eBook with his top 50 picks at Craft & Vision website called “Vision Is Better”.
Today, there’s a new eBook on Craft & Vision website, the title is “Vision In Motion” (the top one).
Here’s their quick overview of the new eBook:
Vision In Motion is an introduction to digital video for stills photographers. Written by Trevor Meier, both a professional stills photographer and film-maker, this eBook discusses the core issues of motion storytelling.
No doubt about it, video is an entirely different medium than stills photography. It’s a different language spoken with different technology and created with different processes. For digital still photographers there is often a great deal of cross-over, but without some help things can easily get lost in translation. Join Trevor as he takes you through the core issues and sets you on the right path to beginning to put your vision in motion.
The price for the Vision In Motion eBook is US$5. And my favourite part is that from now until June 27th, 2010 (11:59PM PST), if you use the code MOTION4 when you check out, you’ll get the eBook for US$4. Or .. if you’re getting more eBooks, you can use the code MOTION20 to get 20% off when you buy 5 or more eBooks (from the Craft & Vision collection).

Just felt an earthquake. Confirmed by the Globe and Mail website .. it was a 5.0 quake felt in Central Canada & some US states. Nuts!
Sometimes we just have to take a break … blank the mind … rest the brain … forget about all the craziness in this world … put our feet up on the table, drink our coffee and eat chocolate.
Sometimes, we just need to relax …
